Session 1: Sustainable mining of resourcesChairs, Anna Vanderbruggen (UL) & Dorian Maillard (UL)

This session will explore the challenges of sustainable mining in Europe. We will look at the strategic and forward-looking vision for the future of the mining sector, particularly with regard to the issues of social acceptability, the circular economy and technological innovations in the extractive industries.

Opening keynote lecture: Sustainable mining: an Oxymoron or a necessity for Europe?

Session 2: Humanities and transitions – Chairs: Stéphane Guy (UL) & Emmanuelle Gurtner (UL)

The session will seek to address the ways in which the humanities and social sciences can help foster initiatives contributing to a just and multiscale transition. Key topics will include exploring the links and possible tensions between the representation, formulation and implementation of environmentally friendly practices, as well as attempts at articulating individual, collective and institutional decision-making. Discussions and prospects will be discussed in three workshops “Thinking and theorizing transition”, “Activism, public opinion and public policy: transition as a challenge to the state and civil society” and “Perceptions, representations and constructions of the environment”

Opening Keynote lecture: by Megan Blomfield (The University of Sheffield)

Session 3: Carbon and hydrogen synergies – Chairs : Bouchra Belaissaoui (UL) & Robert Obenaus-Emler (MUL)

The primary objective of this flagship-oriented session is to provide a real opportunity to take a step back and integrate European issues, priorities and contribute to the flagship’s roadmap and engage stakeholders in meaningful contributions. It is aimed to initiate a collective dynamic within the Alliance to structure the work of the flagship in the months and years to come by bringing together the key players from the various partners. Thus, we need to try and involve as many representatives of our partners as possible in the session‘s activities. The workshop will focus on three key aspects: Systemic innovation, Skills transition, and Impact on regional development.

Opening keynote lecture: by well-known personality with a global view on carbon and hydrogen synergies for the circular economy of carbon.
